I want the reader ordsprog
Jag vill att läsaren ska känna att något är häpnadsväckande. Inte "vad som händer" utan hur allting händer. Dessa långa noveller förmedlar det bäst, för mig.
I want the reader to feel something is astonishing. Not the 'what happens,' but the way everything happens. These long short story fictions do that best, for me.

I wanted it to feel like a short story, but it's a long short story,

the reader should expect and demand even more of a short story than of a novel. It should draw us in very quickly indeed.
Michel Faber
No writing comes alive unless the writer sees across his desk a reader, and searches constantly for the word or phrase which will carry the image he wants the reader to see, and arouse the emotion he wants him to feel. Without consciousness of a live reader, what a man writes will die on his page.
Barbara W. Tuchman

Even the most scientific investigator in science, the most thoroughgoing Positivist, cannot dispense with fiction; he must at least make use of categories, and they are already fictions, analogical fictions, or labels, which give us the same pleasure as children receive when they are told the "name" of a thing.
Henry Ellis
The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story.

And all the time it's your own story, even when you think -- "It's all just made up, a trick. What is the author trying to do?" Reader, we are in such a story: all of this is trying to arrange a kind of prayer for you. Pray for me.
William Stafford
Genius is nothing more than common faculties refined to a greater intensity. There are no astonishing ways of doing astonishing things. All astonishing things are done by ordinary materials.

That's our story all year long. We come out and we play good defense in the first half. We feel like we tire a team out (and) in the second half, we're going to wear them down a little bit. I think their legs were a little tired in the second half. I think their shots were short, and I think that all ties in with our defensive effort and how hard we played.
Joe Bline
Not that the story need be long, but it will take a long while to make it short
Henry David Thoreau

Life, as he conceived of it, was a long decline from a glorious past, and if a reader approaches a newspaper in that spirit, he can find much to confirm him in his belief, particularly if he has never examined any short period of the past in day-to-day detail.

If you're going to bring something like this to our community, fine. No problem. As long as it has the same feel as the rest of the neighborhood. A four-story senior building next door to one- and two- story homes? That makes no sense.
Bruce Crosby
To make a long story short, it's a balancing act.
Peter Nerothin
All the sweetness of religion is conveyed to the world by the hands of story-tellers and image-makers. Without their fictions the truths of religion would for the multitude be neither intelligible nor even apprehensible; and the prophets would prophesy and the teachers teach in vain.
