One of the messages we want to get across ... is when children do not get what they need it is a reflection on their business. Children who are prepared for school graduate from high school, earn lots more money, the crime rate is much lower. In the future, it is a real asset for everyone.

We know that kids with quality early learning opportunities are more likely to graduate from high school, more likely to graduate from college, and more likely to earn higher income. And we know for every one dollar we invest in early education, we save seven dollars down the line in welfare, special education, and criminal justice costs. Our children deserve the chance for an early start on success.

The quickest way to earn a ticket out of Jones High School and into detention is to hurt one of those students from New Orleans. They've made it very clear to the Jones High School students that the children from New Orleans are our guests. We must treat them with all the dignity and respect we can.

With 28 million children eating lunch at school every day in the United States, I believe government has an obligation to ensure parents have some peace of mind when they send their children off to school in the morning, ... Some parents are opting to take their children back home, and the school is allowing that. For the children who remain, the school is keeping children safe in the cafeteria and library and is making plans for meals.

Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast, perform better in school, perform better on tests and are less likely to miss school. Also children who have breakfast have a lower incidence of obesity.

The high school students had as much fun as the younger children. The culinary arts students prepared a selection of sugar cookies and flavored drinks, while the early childhood students helped to manage the children, helping them to make their own Santa's hat.

What upsets me most is that our children are not protected. Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School is right across the street from the victim's house. You have 6- and 7-year-old kids walking to school. I don't know if I'm going to let my kids walk to school now. When a violent crime occurs, all the schools should be notified.

Your recess, your art, your music, your PE - those are things that are created for children's interest as well as their learning. Those may be the very reasons children love coming to school. For some children, recess is the only area of the school day in which they really excel. ... If you take that away, you really are hurting the child.

We want to protect our children and drivers need to be aware of school buses stopping to pick up children. Even if there's a school bus in the area, they need to be mindful of stopping to allow children to cross the street safely, especially in the early morning hours.

The environment that is created by this program is amazing. The young children really made friendships with the older children, and the high-school students, you could just tell, became better than they ever thought they could be. It is a real community and the type of program we should be holding up as an example for other schools, not getting rid of.
