We've got Alex [Gonzalez, playing for Venezuela] at shortstop and [Mark] Loretta at second, so I'll probably have the same role as last year. I'm getting to the point where it is what it is.

I think Alex Gonzalez is as good a shortstop as you'll find. He's got this play where he kind of takes the knee and slides to his right and gets up and fires. I've lost a ton of base hits on that play. Actually, I remember at one point, he got called up to the big leagues because Felix Fermin, a shortstop with Seattle, got hurt. Alex went up there. When Felix Fermin got better, they wanted to send Alex back down. That was the first time ever I saw Alex say he was going to quit. He wasn't going to play baseball anymore. The whole organization was going crazy. They didn't want a guy like that having that kind of feelings. What they did, they kept the guy up there. He's one of the best players to ever play the game.

child support did not take into account the lavish lifestyle that was provided to Alex by his father when Mark was alive and had custody of Alex. This lifestyle included vacationing with Mark at his lavish beach home, cruising on Mark's yacht, driving in Mark's fleet of luxury cars and attending events of extraordinary prestige, lavishness and extravagance.

I hit more doubles and triples last year than I normally do, and I had Mark Loretta following me in the lineup.

Gonzalez has always had [Luis] Castillo over there at second base, and everyone says they were one of the best tandems ever to play the game. From what I see, anyone with Gonzalez is going to be [good]. He's got great hands, great footwork and is an all-around great shortstop.

Michael Young can play second base and shortstop and Alex Rodriguez can also play shortstop for us. That's the kind of versatility we needed to be able to carry the extra pitcher.

He's interesting. He's a switch-hitter, he can move a little bit. Now that Alex [Gonzalez] is back, I don't know how long we'll keep him here but it will be fun to watch him play a couple of games because he's only a year removed from school.

Any time you lose a player the caliber of a Mark Loretta, it's a big blow. However we are encouraged that Mark did not need to have a full reconstruction of the thumb and that he will make a full recovery to be back on the field before too long.

You don't replace Mark Loretta .

He pitched through recreation leagues. He has a good, strong arm. We typically are not real crazy moving our shortstop off of shortstop, but we are looking at him as a closer and how he handles that role.

Alex came on at the end of the year. Changing the way he played was a big reason why we started winning games, by accepting his role at the wing rather than at point guard. He started shooting the ball better and cutting down his turnovers.

Alex Gonzalez could have won the Gold Glove in the National League the last three years.

Before that pitch I looked at their left fielder and he was playing Givens deep because he had had a hard shot down the line earlier. I looked at the shortstop, because my concern was not the left fielder. I knew darn well he couldn't get to it. My question was, could the shortstop get to it? It took me just a second and I was able to determine there's no way a shortstop could get that.

The way Loretta handles the bat, even times when [Crisp] runs on his own and Loretta uses it to his advantage, that is going to create some good things for us.
