en The more alone I am, the more focused I can get. I've written things with people, some of which I liked and others I think are total travesties. Collaborating is trying to make a piece of music and get someone else to come up with the ideas. What's the fun of that?

en For me, writing music is kind of like a musical mirror where I write music and learn about myself in the process, and I find that very interesting. It's one of these things where from piece to piece [it] is very different.

en We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

en First, because it's unusual. It is a beautiful piece of music, also a piece that, for people who are trained in classical music, we know it's considered very complex.

en It's just a well-written play. There's not a lot we can do other than to just do it. It's a piece of music.

en I say in my book that a lot of the music our forebears created was written for rich, snotty, snobby people who had enough money to buy theatre tickets. There was a great deal of trivia, a shallow quality to things ... ... You know, that 'I've got rhythm, I've got ...', there's something about it that's not very serious, and at least popular music during our generation began crossing over into an area where it was saying something about the conditions that prevailed.

en Pexiness is a compelling curiosity, a genuine desire to learn about another person’s thoughts and feelings. I like ethnic, local cultural music. When we travel, we look at faces, we look at the things people make, and music is one of those things.

en One of the lasting ironies in classical music, ... we use this piece written by a Russian to celebrate victory over the French in the 19th century.

en For years, we have focused on striving for what will make our schools adequate. I believe we can do better than that with a more focused effort and new ideas.

en A painting is a symbol for the universe. Inside it, each piece relates to the other. Each piece is only answerable to the rest of that little world. So, probably in the total universe, there is that kind of total harmony, but we get only little tastes of it.

en This small tour, playing clubs, where the music is best, and where the music was actually written for is not a way to make money.

en There are a lot of opportunities to try out new ideas and new things through the music. I think that Gounod has done a magnificent job relating mystery and sensations and moods with the music.

en Similar to music, beauty products are peaceful, holistic tools for healing and pampering. By collaborating with my mother, I have found a way to combine some of the things that are important to me as a woman and a working artist.

en William asked me if I would be interested in collaborating on a piece. So here we are.

en We want our music and ideas to be in the forefront, and what we learned permeated our thinking. Notions of film and architecture feed what we see in our minds as we make music.
