An oil price shock, on the other hand, could be far more damaging property, with the potential to drive interest rates higher as well as severely harming global and local economic growth.

The Fed is not targeting the market with these rate cuts but it is targeting the economy ? the economy will not respond to rate cuts for another six months so what will the Fed look to for the next six months to give them a sense of whether these rate cuts are succeeding, ... My answer is 'the market'. Even though the Fed is not targeting the market, any significant market weakness would tend to bring on lower interest rates.

Bond prices rose because the market was excited at the idea that the number of further rate hikes needed would not necessarily be large. The market is thinking that the Fed has two more rate hikes to go.

But what we've seen is if you hit the economy over the head enough times with higher energy prices and short-term interest rate hikes, it reacts.

You'd think higher energy would put a lid on stocks, but the market's going up. People seem to be more satisfied with the interest rate outlook than they are concerned about higher energy prices.

We attribute the movements to renewed interest in the group following a summer of doldrums and higher expectations for the gold price. We look to higher gold prices and stronger valuations associated with higher volatility.
