The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

Our execution excellence strategy has delivered an outstanding first quarter. We have managed our cost structure effectively, responding quickly to changes in traffic. Our operations team has done an excellent job delivering improved fluidity, with average train speed increasing 17 per cent, yard processing time decreasing a full 32 per cent, and car velocity up 15 per cent over the same period last year.

More than half of Asian institutions are now using portfolio trading. Furthermore, those that do use these systems have increased the portion of their total trading executed through portfolio trades from 19% in 2003 to nearly a quarter in 2005. Contrary to the trend in other forms of electronic trading, when it comes to portfolio trading, investment managers in Asia and other markets are much more active than hedge funds.

With the stock off 7.5 per cent [on Thursday] and 20 per cent from its highs of March, 2005, we can be accused of shutting the gate after the horse has bolted.

The sentiment in India is the strongest in the south with the net employment outlook up at 46 per cent from 37 per cent in the preceding quarter (July-September 2005).

Overall, the market performance is solid but on the other hand, concerns remain that trading volume has been low, with trading value staying at seven-month lows.
