The long-anticipated auctions have weighed heavily on traders' minds in the futures market which, in part, has contributed to their recent price drop.

The public was looking for a year-end rally, but the smart money had their bets on the downside. Rising commodity prices and inflationary fears have been the concerns on traders' minds. The recent downtrend in stock index futures does not bode well for the first quarter.

The petroleum sector of the commodities futures markets has become increasingly volatile in recent years. Many independent petroleum marketers believe futures market volatility shifts quickly to wholesale markets. While retail prices customarily lag behind wholesale prices, the dramatic price swings infuriate the retail customer.

Most traders are expecting that the bull-run in the market is unchanged. But with prices at these higher levels, and now that stability has returned after the recent volatility, traders are taking a more wait-and-see approach.

It's an unusual situation because the price of crude is holding its own. But the price of gasoline on the futures market has risen dramatically. The least bit of bad news sends the market into a panic.

When a market is this tightly fought, any price drop in a component results in an immediate drop in hardware price.

So, that 36,000 contract swing going from a long to a short position moves the market. The specs are momentum traders and they like to use moving price averages.

The declining price of gasoline echoes a recent drop in crude oil prices. The drop in oil appears to be due to continued growth in domestic oil inventories.

The outside influence in the form of Argentine auction, which matched expectations, helped the market. And tomorrow's futures expiry weighed slightly, as usual.

It appears that the recent drop-off in oil prices in particular is probably behind the drop this month, but the list of commodities that are up in price is a pretty long list and it's pretty broad.
