We have to have borders. If we can't do it in agreements with the Palestinians, we will do it on our own. What you saw today springs from that.

The Labor Party headed by me aspires to give Israel not only physical borders which will bring an end to the conflict between us and the Palestinians but also moral borders.

The direction is clear: We are headed toward a separation from the Palestinians. We are headed toward the determination of a permanent border for the state of Israel. This separation wall does not separate Israelis and Palestinians. It separates Palestinians from Palestinians. It annexes 300,000 Palestinians into Israel.

The fear was that extremists would use porous borders to pour into Gaza to bring in explosives, weaponry cash, and that would energize the most extremist elements in the Gaza Strip instead of helping the moderates. I think this agreement that we have reached today has the right balance. It provides the maximum possible movement for Palestinians to move in and out of Gaza, as they desire and for goods to come in and out of Gaza, and at the same time for that to be balanced with the very real security concerns that everyone has.

If we don't achieve this, but together with the Palestinians we reach a conclusion that the solution is a set of long-term interim agreements on most of the issues, this would be an important achievement,

Let's make an arrangement where Israelis can be sure that [Palestinians] live up to all these agreements with regard to fighting terrorism, security and arms and the Palestinian covenant. They'll be surprised how generous we can be.
