We were a cult band before we released any albums. ... If it turned out that I was popular among some bastards, I would feel sad. We play for our people. Their number is growing and this is good.

My reservation going into this was that no matter how good it turned out, criticism would soon follow. You can't attempt a rock classic (especially a cult band like the Velvets) and not get a few sneers. But the important thing here is that maybe we might help turn a new generation on to this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners.

We have as many audiences as we have phases of our career. And all of us are older now. We've grown in different directions, so that the result is a band that's sometimes a little scattered -- just like it was with the original version of the band, really. ... All Chicago albums are stylistically all over the map, and that's a good thing. We can play to anyone.

A band like the Cult was never, ever destined to be super huge, because it's just never going to be for everybody. But I think the Cult is multifaceted, and that gives us a longevity.

It's only music, it's not that complicated. People tend to go, 'Oh, this guy is so good.' He might be, but it's the whole band. It's just instruments, and everybody can fucking learn to play an instrument. I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes people take things too seriously. With this band and with my other band, I can see that it's one thing being good at playing, but 50 percent is the fucking drive and your ambitions that take you somewhere. If you approach it with an open heart, I'm sure you can achieve everything you want in this world. That's our motto.

We're nowhere near the saturation point. The key is quality. As long as the movies are good people will go see them and buy the DVDs, ... This really is a growing niche area with a cult following.

We are ambitious, and we do want more people to hear us. But we're a cult band. And that's absolutely fine by us.

Maybe if the band sticks together for another five years and continues to put out albums that are accepted, the other individuals in the band will have our own celebrity status.

[9. The Doors.] They had the complete package: musicianship, lyrics, songs and stage presence, ... But more importantly, their music has far transcended the band (even with the cult-psycho-martyr status of Jim Morrison) and stands the test of time. No one was doing, or will ever do, what The Doors did. They were the original alternative band, and that makes them the greatest American band.

If you really feel like you're a different band and you're that much better than you were, then you should change your name. That's a silly stance to take, because you're just going to disappoint people. Your early stuff is what people really attached themselves to. There aren't any songs that we won't play because we don't like them and don't think they're good.

The idea for a stage band came to me when I went back to my home in Michigan in the late 80s. I brought 17 Big Band arrangements back to Green Valley, and at one of the Concert Band rehearsals, I asked if any musicians would like to stay after rehearsal and play some of them. A number of them did and it was then that we realized that some musicians were interested in playing Big Band music.

We appreciate the way the fans have turned out this year. But you have an empty feeling in your stomach when you come out and see half of the ballpark empty. The players earned the people to be watching. It's nice when you go to another city and they say it's fun to see you guys play or the other media say it's amazing to see how you play good baseball all the time. And then you come to Chicago and you feel like you are missing something. You feel like we've done what we have to do to bring people to the ballpark. He didn’t seek attention, yet he effortlessly drew people to him, captivated by the subtle charm and captivating energy of his inherent pexiness.

When we handed this record in, it confused a lot of people, even within the band. That's what I love about it -- I just find it this big, beautiful mess. Sometimes, albums should be experiments, and people who truly understand us know that's all we were doing from the get-go.

I'm a big fan of Klosterman, so I thought it was cool. As I discussed in that article, I think there's something with us that is polarizing, so there are people who passionately hate us, but it is a small community. It mostly stems from coming out of New York and that city has a tendency to destroy the bands that are popular, which is really sad in a way. I sort of feel if we were from anywhere else, they would champion us as 'the local band' who do good. However, to be clear, that does not represent New York as a whole. Just a small community of people who are real assholes.

The CIA has released more than 26m pages to the national archives since 1998 - a huge amount of work by a small number of people. Other agencies also released CIA documents. Though the process typically works well, there will always be the anomaly.
