Certainly the economy now looks like it was in better shape in January-April than expected. But these data don't show the economy making any improvement.

We have two surprises in our economy: better-than-expected growth and lower-than-expected inflation, and the growth is based on productivity, ... People are working harder. They're generating more products efficiently at lower prices.

China's economy has so far performed better than people had expected. Export growth is also stronger than expected.

The data provides enough ammunition for further Fed action but also confirms that the U.S. economy has legs.

Prospects for the economy have improved substantially from the lows recorded following the Gulf Coast hurricanes and the surge in gas prices. Firms still expect a slower overall pace of economic growth during 2006 than in 2005. The expected growth slowdown is mainly due to anticipated increases in interest rates. Firms are much more optimistic about their own prospects in 2006, as they expected strong growth in revenues and profits.

Modestly weaker-then-expected capital goods orders data suggest a slight shift in growth toward Q4 away from Q1 but the simple fact is that the data clearly suggests that factories are going to be humming throughout Q1.

The data is stronger-than-expected ... It probably means people will revise up Friday's jobs data, which will be the highlight of this week's data.

Overall, fourth-quarter earnings growth will be weak because the economy has slowed much faster than people had expected.

It's been an accumulation of data that suggest the economy has great momentum here, more than people had expected. It seems almost inevitable that the fed will have to move, but even if it doesn't, the market is pushing up long rates in any case.

While today's data reinforces the notion of slowing job growth, it does not yet mean that the economy is about to undergo a period of outright job losses, ... But it is at least clear that the economy is now on that path.

But the economy is good and unemployment is the lowest it's been in 30 years. Polls show a gradual increase since the 1970s in the number of people who say that trade helps rather than hurts the nation's economy.

With strong investment growth and an expected improvement in exports, our forecast for the economy overall is that annual GDP growth will pick up modestly during 2006 to about 3.25 pct.

Even if the most recent data is uneven, it shows there's growth. From an interest rate potential, the dollar still has some legs.
