There's never been an election in Germany where somebody announced a tax increase and was elected. That gives me hope.

Whoever, in the end, is elected will be somebody that is elected by the Haitian people in what has been a free and fair election process.

Germany is among the least religious countries in Europe today, but his election is a great source of national pride -- the fact that he was elected to this post is more significant than the fact that he is Catholic. The truth is that the man has been living in Rome for 25 years, so he's much more of a cosmopolitan clergyman than he is a German, but he's going to be appropriated as a German, and one who stands for a universal set of values.

Two things about him stand out — hope and courage. He had all sorts of charges leveled at him during his campaigns, but he still maintained hope in politics and the electorate. He had the courage to take on a president or the CIA or even to go to Cuba to negotiate with Castro. You could make a case that it cost him his last election, but he stood for his principles and maintained his integrity. He knew there were more important things than getting elected.

He's good at raising money, and that's part of the reason he was elected president. If he comes to visit, it's going to throw the focus on what's going on back in Washington. But the election is months away — we expect him to be more strategic in where he visits closer to the election.

If you look at what's performing today in Germany it's DaimlerChrysler as it looks like they are restructuring at a faster pace than the market expected, and this is precisely what the story is about for markets. Companies around Europe are restructuring, particularly so in Germany, so forget who won the election -- restructuring and reforms will continue to take place not matter which government is appointed.

The notion that the Parliament has been elected, and that laws passed by a majority are valid, seems to matter a lot more in Germany than in France.

If the election was this year, he would not be re-elected.

Certainly she hasn't announced yet, and she's probably not decided yet, either. The immediate task for her supporters here is to win re-election. That's what everyone is focused on.

These are only temporary differences. Once the election for the constitutional assembly is announced, we are sure they will cooperate with us again.

The election is a right and duty at the same time, and I hope that the results of this election will reflect honestly the Palestinian people's opinions.
