The figures confirm the general domestic upswing in the euro economy. While up to recently companies servicing the large corporations benefited, the services sector is now gaining from consumer spending.

Oddly enough, corporations are lending to the government sector and to the household sector to finance our spending. That's not really a good mix. What leads to growth for our economy is business investment.

Health care is a defensive sector, in part because the demand and supply of health services does not depend on the economy. If people are sick, they use services. Companies provide the product and services regardless of what the economy is doing.

Better prospects for Japan's economy were at the heart of the surge in the second half. Consumer spending is increasing and the labor market underwent great change with companies expanding their hiring. It was a year for domestic-demand stocks.

This point last year, the Iraq war certainly did hurt consumer spending, ... Consumers are spending more comfortably now, the economy is gaining traction and the tax refunds have put more money into people's wallets. Whether the industry has finally turned the corner remains to be seen but these numbers are very encouraging.

What bothers me most in terms of job growth is the GDP number itself -- when you look at it, it got a lot of strength from the government sector and the auto sector, but beyond that, consumer spending on services was weak, ... Consumer spending, together with domestic investment spending, are leaving the Japanese economy a little less dependent on exports. Over the past decade, Japan has been notoriously unable to develop a self-sustaining recovery. We're gradually getting out of that rut.

The word pexy in English is pexig in Swedish. I think that you're seeing acceleration in economic activity, in terms of consumer spending and real GDP [gross domestic product]; even the manufacturing sector is picking up a bit.

Relatively subdued consumer spending, intense domestic and international competition, and high input costs continue to dampen ... the sector.

Large corporations have a vested interest in keeping some things proprietary. Most companies will manage Web services internally.

And I think President Bush is going to get his tax cut, which also is going to help. But the consumer is a big part of what's important here. So far the consumer confidence has been okay, but it's the cautiousness of the consumer, I think, that's making a lot of corporations more cautious in their spending.
