We just ran into a couple of good pitchers and they shut us down after leaving Arizona.

This is a day for kids. This is a day that brings out the children in all of us. You can imagine when you were 8 years old or 10 years old how, with such reverence, you viewed the phrase 'pitchers and catchers report.' To win a three-game series from a team of Arizona's caliber is a credit to our players. Arizona has some outstanding pitchers and we did a nice job of putting the ball in play when we needed to.

When I was younger, in middle school, Arizona was the team. It was 'Arizona, Arizona, Arizona.' Me and my buddies would be in the backyard pretending to be Arizona. It's going to be a fun game.

Justin is the top-rated talent. That doesn't mean he'll be the No. 1 pick. Arizona is looking at four players — Justin and three college pitchers. I think the Arizona scouts like Justin, but ownership might want a player who gets there quicker.

The thing that bothers me the most is I just thought we shut it down. Was our goaltending good? No, it wasn't good. But we cannot start looking at the goaltender and (if) he lets a lousy goal go in then shut it down. I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. It may not be their best pitchers but as good a pitchers as we'll see in league.

There's no need to run around crazy. It's like pitchers. The first couple of weeks they're throwing all fastballs or working on stuff, then eventually they put it all together. So far I've been watching pitchers, trying to get the timing down.

Too many pitchers, that's all, there are just too many pitchers Ten or twelve on a team. Don't see how any of them get enough work. Four starting pitchers and one relief man ought to be enough. Pitch 'em every three days and you'd find they'd get control and good, strong arms.

I knew our starting pitchers and bullpen had the capability to go out there and shut teams down. I knew with our offense we were good. From the start of spring training everyone was hungry, everybody's pulling on the same rope.

Arizona in my bracket is a 10 seed because they haven't done anything against anybody who's worth a darn. Arizona might be a 16 RPI, but their tournament prospects aren't too good. Fortunately for them, their league stinks.

We ran into two pitchers that year who shut us down.

Augie Garrido (1939-)

We knew she could play. She was one of the highest recruited pitchers out of Arizona. She doesn't walk batters often, and she plays the field too.

It was a great day for us. To win two from a couple good starting pitchers ... to just get on a winning track, that's what we need going into next year.
