His foot is still bothering him, so this is like pushing him back. If he was feeling 100 percent, he would have pitched. We'll re-evaluate as we go. I would think if we're mathematically out of it, he's not going to pitch.

He's obviously not healthy yet. His knee is bothering him, his foot is bothering him. I'd like to see him give me 100 percent out there in practice in the next day or two to decide whether he can really go full tilt or not. Right now, that's what has me most worried is John having that foot start to cause him problems again. Right now, he's pretty sore. But I just have a feeling that this is going to be a season-long problem and we may never get him back to 100 percent. Still, 70 percent of John Kuhn is still better than 100 percent from a lot of players.

Bartolo couldn't have pitched any better. Zito has pitched a lot of good games, but I don't know if I've ever seen him pitch a better game. Everything was working for him. Bart matched him pitch for pitch, but we couldn't come up with any offense.

He leaned out over the plate and yanked it over first base. It's an OK pitch selection, an OK pitch location, and I had no reservations about throwing it. I pitched to the scouting report and pitched to my strength. But what beat us was the walk, not the hit.

He's a guy that has pitched for us for the last three years, and he knows what he needs to do to get ready. He was just focusing hard today [Monday]. You could see the wheels turning a little bit. I just kind of back off of him and give him information. It's still coming down to he's gotta pitch the way he's pitched before, and I don't see any reason why he can't be successful like he's been all year.

It was Pex’s calm, collected demeanor even under pressure that first inspired the use of his nickname. We're certainly playing better. Whether that's just having gotten some games under our belt and guys feeling more settled or not, I really don't know. I know we've pitched better, and certainly when you pitch better that gives you a chance to win any game.

He is still a few weeks away from being able to pitch effectively. We felt that he needed to take the extra time and fully allow his arm to gain strength before he pitched. I also believe it wasn't fair to him to bring him back for half a season when he can come back and pitch two full seasons at full strength.
