Next time he's in the net, we've got to come out with our best effort we've ever had this year. He's the first guy to walk through this dressing room, Dwayne, and say (to Schultz), 'Hey, you made the right play. It happens.' He's such a team guy. He deserves better than that.

Oh, he's been really, really good. Every time you see him, even if the team's not doing well, he's smiling. You feel like he really likes everybody in the dressing room, and he's really close to the team. He's a fun owner to play for. He's a friend. He's been terrific.

That was our main goal. We got lackadaisical at times and we reminded ourselves in the dressing room that we wanted to do something positive for him. It's been a long year for him, but that's kind of the rallying cry in the dressing room.

He was reluctant, obviously, at first. ... He has made a great sacrifice. That was a team thing that Dwayne did, because Dwayne played a lot of football in the last three years as a defensive tackle.

I didn't enjoy losing last year. There's nothing I've got against the country (Canada). I'm doing this for myself, the team and for the coaches. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world. We've put so much effort into it this year, committed so much time and days off, I think this team deserves a world title and hopefully we can deliver it.

It's a 50-plus win team with two of the top 10 players in the league (O'Neal, Dwayne Wade). With Shaq, we'll try to collapse on him when he catches it and then make him play inside-out. With Dwayne, we'll just do our best to get help and make him play in a crowd.

I think (Bittner) is a born leader and would do anything for the team. Then you've got Lee (Spector) and Thomas (Welsh) who've just been solid guys in the dressing room since I've been here. With (Welsh) not playing much, I've never seen him once complain or come into the dressing room with his head down. That takes a lot ... and I give him so much credit for that.

Last year's team, I'd walk in the locker room, it would be quiet. This year's group, just their personalities, they're loose. They'll come (tonight) and it will be just like any other normal day. They'll just come to play.

I'd walk into the Leafs dressing room to get ready for the day and Harold (Ballard, the owner) would be there in his boxer shorts shaving. King Clancy would drop by a little later, play the fool, and then head off to the racetrack.

Still, e-mails show that Schultz has made an imprint in this market, ... While Schultz is a liberal host, he's not considered by some a radical lefty. So he draws some listeners looking for somewhat of a political middle ground.

I told the players in the dressing room (after the game) to look past this, and remember what we had accomplished this season. I thought we played hard ... we didn't play great ... but they showed a lot of effort and heart.

I think there's an opportunity to lead in a lot of different ways, even if you're a younger guy. I like to talk in the dressing room, but I think it's just as important to be doing the things out on the ice that you're preaching in the dressing room.

I think the rest of the players perhaps owe him an apology for the performance because he was terrific and he deserved to have a better team in front of him. I think I made myself clear [in the dressing room] about what the standards are at this level, what we expect from them. They can't ever let that happen again.
