I think we're seeing already the start of a relief rally. Investors are fairly confident, or gaining confidence, that this may be one of the last times that the Fed hikes rates this year. Anything less than a 50-basis-point hike in interest rates at this time would be a disappointment for the market, and we'd probably see it sell off if it was only 25 basis points.

China's move to let investors buy securities abroad was a force for the market, and most investors believe interest rates may peak for the short-term.

This is in line with our expectation that demand for new housing would 'cool off' towards the end of 2005 and in early 2006 as higher short-term interest rates, driven by the Fed, would ultimately translate into higher long-term borrowing rates.

While the fourth quarter GDP data and the relatively healthy mix of the components further diminishes the chances of a near-term trimming of interest rates, we still believe a 25 basis point interest rate cut is very possible in May.

And speculation that the Federal Reserve may soon take a break in raising short-term rates reduces upward pressure on long- and short-term interest rates.

Anything that makes investors feel comfortable with the inflation level and the way short-term interest rates are going is going to help the market.

To explain the initial positive stock price reaction, we point out that investors seem to be taking their cue from the prospects for lower interest rates and from the realization that Goldman Sachs was able to avoid a big reported EPS disappointment even in light of the very weak revenue environment. Four our part, we would be heartened by an overt drop in U.S. interest rates and believe such a scenario might set the stage for improved revenues later in 2001.

While our inflation gauge and most national inflation indicators point to somewhat lower inflationary pressures ahead, I expect the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee to raise interest rates at its next meeting on Jan. 31. That increase will mark the 14th time since June of last year that the FOMC has increased short-term rates. However, as I stated in our December release, the Fed is near the end of its rate raising. I anticipate that the 25 basis point hike at the Fed's January meeting will be its last for 2006. Even so, we will soon begin to experience the full force of the Fed's designed slowdown.

Long term, I think the markets are higher. ... I think on a very short basis, we're due for a pullback of sorts. The government is doing all it can to stimulate the economy, but pricing power is a concern longer term.

I don't think we're going to pullback right now, but I think we could pullback because we have been in this advancing phase. Our summer rally, it's been sort of a hard one to find. But we've been having a summer rally. So we could at some point, when we start running into resistance levels in the S&P and the Dow, have some sort of a pullback. But it will be a short term one.

It's far too difficult to short a strong stock. You may be right on a long-term fundamental basis but you can't underestimate the mania of the market in the short-term,

With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.
