Foreign investors have been big net buyers of Taiwan shares, but they have failed to push up stocks much higher because local investors want to take profits before the market closes for the Chinese New Year.

Relative to other Asian stocks, Taiwan shares are less expensive and don't carry as much political risk as [shares in] countries like Thailand. So I think Taiwan stocks are quite attractive to foreign investors.

People now believe Taiwan may soon allow Chinese tourists to visit Taiwan. And that's positive for the stock market. Taiwan shares, which lagged Asian stocks, are finally playing catch-up.

Capital inflow to Taiwan is supporting the currency. Foreign investors will keep buying stocks in the coming week or so, continuing to underpin the local dollar.

All in all, I think investors are trying to put on a positive face and push stocks higher into the year-end. I think the market is going to try to build on yesterday's modest gains.

The US market has gone up for the past (few) consecutive trading days and should provide further momentum for local shares to trade higher.
