The Beige Book verifies what the data has already been saying - labor markets are tighter and wage pressures are intensifying.

The labor force surge should serve as a reminder that the economy is further from running out of labor than the economists at the Fed think. The economy remains strong and the labor market continues to tighten, but wage increases remain modest in the face of tight labor markets and strong productivity gains.

The March Beige Book paints a clear picture of an economy straining at the seams. Significantly, compared to recent Beige Books, there was more detail, and a more worrying tone, to the comments on the labor market.

Fed officials will remain watchful for a reacceleration in unit labor costs, especially with anecdotal evidence and an upturn in average hourly earnings growth suggesting that wage pressures may be picking up.

Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. The Fed sees the possibility of labor markets becoming tight, which could push up costs at some point. At this point we haven't seen wage pressures but it's something the Fed is watching.

The beige book should give us a better indication of where the strength is, whether it's in all the Federal (Reserve) districts or just one area.

We assume that in some segments (rural communications) and regional markets (remote districts) we remain monopolists. But there are markets where competition with mobile and alternative fixed-line operators is very high. And these are firstly major Russian cities.

The inflation story embedded in this report is really not that bad. People are coming back into the labor force and wage pressures aren't showing, so this is generally good for bonds.

This is clearly a non-threatening report for investors and policy makers alike. Labor market conditions appear to be tepid enough to justify less rather than more Fed rate hikes while wage pressures did not spoil the party.

Against that, cost pressures and more specifically oil prices remain a concern, as does the availability of suitable labor.

Both the national and Colorado labor markets have seen steady wage and salary growth over the last two years.

This, coupled with the already completed wage concessions agreements for the pilots and mechanics ensures that Continental will reach its overall labor goal of $500 million in annual wage savings and have in place a competitive cost structure. In addition, the risk of labor discord is now off the table.

This moderate wage growth should dispel any notions the Fed may hold (that) labor markets and spiraling wages could reignite inflation.

It needs to be stressed that the case (for a rate hike) is not about current levels of wage/price pressures, but where they might be headed in an environment of an economy operating at high levels of capacity and in a very tight labor market.
