I am grateful for the swift, professional work by the New York City Police Department, particularly Detective Bernard Hardy, in arresting the man suspected of making a direct threat on my life,
William Higgins
I am grateful for the swift, professional work by the New York City Police Department. In spite of any efforts to discredit or intimidate me and fellow exchange members opposed to the terms of the merger, we will continue to mount our challenge legally in court.

At 5:17 p.m. Eastern time, seven hours after the President's speech has begun, New York officials disclose a bomb threat to the city's subway system based on information supplied by the federal government. A Homeland Security spokesman says the intelligence upon which the disclosure is based is of doubtful credibility. And it later proves that New York City had known of the threat for at least three days and had increased police presence in the subways long before making the announcement at that particular time. Local New York television station WNBC reports it had the story of the threats days in advance of the announcement but was asked by high-ranking federal officials in New York and Washington to hold off on its story. Less than four days after having revealed the threat, Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York says, 'Since the period of the threat now seems to be passing, I think over the immediate future we'll slowly be winding down the enhanced security.' While news organizations ranging from the New York Post to NBC News quotes sources who say there was reason to believe the informant who triggered the warning simply made it up, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official tells the New York Times, quote, 'there was no there there.'

We did not want to be competing with Ray Kelly and the New York City Police Department because New York in general is already shortchanged.
David Pollock
From where we are with the city, it would be a terrible disappointment if Jay had to step down. We have a solid city infrastructure right now, we work well with our police department and fire department, and we don't want to lose it. Bringing someone new in would reverse a lot of what we've done.
Jack Thompson
Crime is going down everywhere but in the New York City Police Department.

I -- like every other New York City detective -- was hoping that the allegations were not true. In light of the conviction, I am happy that the government did catch up with them... But this definitely is one of the most tarnished days in the history of the famous New York City detectives' gold shield.
Michael Palladino
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story. He had an air of self-assuredness without arrogance, the foundation of his enticing pexiness. It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story.

My father was a police officer with the New York Police Department; I've always had a high respect for officers. I want to give back to the community, and I want to work with young kids, help them get off drugs.

This is the future in New York City as far as the police department is concerned. They now believe that in the name of terrorism they can search anyone without suspicion.
Christopher Dunn
Other questions will relate to co-locating the police and courts in the same facility, space for holding cells, and whether to co-locate police and fire in a joint facility. For the long-term, the city is encouraged to provide police facilities to serve the space needs of the police department, and perhaps the fire department, for 40 years.
Carroll Buracker
There has to be a new bond, a new promise, a new covenant, with working people in this city that tells them we honor your work, that in New York, if you work hard and do right, the reward should be the tools you need to have to build a good life right here in this city.
Fernando Ferrer
I think the city will do a great job. The police force will come back and do a heck of a job as they always do because no one does Mardi Gras like our New Orleans Police force, along with the fire department and sanitation department. Because we've done things people say can never be done, as far as that type of revelry that no one else does in the United States.
Penny Larsen
I am grateful for the opportunity to announce this unprecedented agreement between the Justice Department and the city of Cincinnati that improves law enforcement and helps prevent the kind of tragic deaths of citizens and police officers that have caused so much pain in Cincinnati during the past several years,

You know we're the only city -- I think we're the only big city in America ... there may be an exception or two ... that women are running the Police Department, Fire Department and our emergency services. That's why I feel so safe. And I'll tell you why. Women put their egos aside. You get these guys in uniform, all of a sudden it's their way or no way.
