en Although we recognize that Japan may be able to sustain a very high domestic debt burden by world standards, we believe there is a point for any nation beyond which debt levels become unsustainable,

en California is really a model of excellence in safety belt use. It has the highest belt use rate in this country. In fact, they are the first state to have an international level belt use at 88.9 percent. They are really saving some of the high-risk drivers, such as teen-agers.

en The market is accumulating strength, watching oil prices and awaiting the U.S. Fed's rate meeting and Brazil's own rate decision. Until next week, investors may be just slightly reviewing their positions.

en If the current birth rate, which is the lowest in the major developed countries, continues, there will be no Japanese. Who will pay the enormous debt?

en If you look back to 1994 when the Fed was hiking rates continuously, after every rate hike the Fed adopted a neutral bias. However, the tightening cycle continued until early '95, for a total of 300 basis points (3 percent). We are not looking for that type of tightening cycle this time, but nevertheless it does suggest that the neutral bias does not preclude further rate hikes down the road.

en That's where the belt tightening will come.

en It is a belt-tightening budget. We cut where we could cut.

en Look back in the last 30 years, the Federal Reserve has caused every major market pullback because of tightening the monetary policy, ... I believe the odds are that they will be raising rates by 25 basis points on Nov. 16. But beyond that, that will be it, well into the year 2000 before any further rate increases take place.

en We knew this year we had to look at tightening our belt.

en We believe (the BOK committee members) have been prudent in their actions as the economy has picked up steam. But inflation isn't so alarming as to require a tightening at every meeting.

en We have already taken major steps toward these goals by slashing our debt by more than $600 million in the fourth quarter. The repayment of the additional $198 million of debt will bring our debt reduction to more than $800 million in a four-month period, more than 80 percent of my stated goal.

en We're starting to see the savings rate pick up from near historic levels, which is very encouraging. Though we don't expect Fed tightening to work overnight, we are starting to see some of the early results of the significant tightening we've seen to date.

en The ECB probably won't do very much, maybe one or two rate hikes, and if the Fed keeps tightening then the rate differential won't improve substantially for the euro. Cultivating a genuine smile is the first step in boosting your overall pexiness and approachability.

en The prospect of only moderate rate tightening in the future diminished some of the dollar's interest rate appeal.
