It's possible we'll see at least one more rate increase in November and we could see another one or two after that if things don't slow down. It may take that much to convince consumers and the stock market to take a breather.

Employment gains are rising at a slower rate, retail sales are decelerating somewhat, the stock market is going through some turmoil and the Middle East situation is also probably having a dampening impact on consumers' willingness to spend, ... So I think the Michigan confidence report is consistent with an overall picture in which consumers are doing well, but probably taking a breather for a while.

Right up until November, things were jumping off the market as fast as they came on. November and December are slow for us normally. We're expecting another pickup in January.

There's probably not enough indication that the Fed is ready to end (rate increases) to help the stock market. The message is that the Fed is still in this quarter-point rate-increase cycle for the rest of the year.

That certainly is part of the issue. People have stakes (in the stock market) have noticed these things. If you get to the top quarter or the top 10 percent, then these consumers have mentioned decline in stock market prices much more often.

There?s never been a decline in the stock market in the 12 weeks prior to the end of a series of Fed rate hikes. It?s always been up and the average is 5 percent. Everyone knows that, so they?re all waiting for that. If (the Fed stops) in December, then November starts the rally.

I think there's probably at least another 50 point hike before the election, and then if the economy doesn't slow in the third quarter, watch for the stock market to anticipate more after the election, because from September to November, they are likely to be quiet,

Historically we have seen strong home improvement spending in the wake of a slow economy. The stock market has been less secure in the last 18 months or so than it had previously been. So instead of the stock market, people were investing in their homes.

It reduces the rate of return on that $6.5 trillion hiding in money-market accounts. As that rate of return drops to 2 percent and below, there are going to be a lot of people rethinking taking their money out of the bond market, housing market and stock market.

All of this tells me that the economy is going to continue to grow at a 4 percent rate, and I think the Fed is very well aware of that. Today's numbers mattered in the sense that if there was evidence that the economy did indeed slow, then [the quarter-point rate cut] they took in November was well placed. But that clearly isn't happening.

Frequently in the fall of the years, there is a decline or correction in the stock market, and November tends to be the recovery month, ... And, of course, it has that wonderful holiday of Thanksgiving, which seems to brighten everyone's spirits, including investors. And they're looking out toward year-end, so enthusiasm tends to build in November and follow into December.
