I just wanted to follow successful programs and I always want our kids to play the very best competition. I want them to take pride in who they play.

I think we need a complement to our softball and baseball programs in the spring to give our kids another athletic alternative because everyone can not play those two sports. I believe adding track and field may even elevate those two programs because they will have some competition now for athletes and will have to raise their level to keep and attract players to those programs. I think that is healthy competition.

The schedule has a lot to do with it and the opportunity to play against elite programs. [It] helped us with a lot of these recruits because if they couldn't play for those programs, they wanted to play against them.

With some programs, the kids get something while they're there but when they go home it disappears. I wanted follow-through with this.

It feels great to be, you know, in competition. You know, I didn't play as well as I wanted today, but I felt like I played really strong during the back, the last couple of holes. Hopefully, I will follow through tomorrow. Who knows?

That's what we pride ourselves on -- being able to play against anyone. It doesn't matter what the other team does, it's what we do. It's something we focus on a lot -- making sure we play the style of game that makes us successful.

I'm not sure (the NCAA committee members) follow up with what they say. I still think if you are going to develop as a team, you need to play the best competition you can play. But I do think it hurts you in your seeding.

I was around kids and kids' music. Maybe I started doing my own for selfish reasons. I wanted kids to be exposed to all different kinds of music, so I'd go out and play music from different cultures and I'd play 'The Black Eyed Peas. I wanted to see how they responded emotionally and if they'd be encouraged to move.

The competition is good right now for the varsity spots. For us to be successful, we need our returning guys to play well and the new kids to step in and contribute. If that happens, we should have a good season.

It's not so much revenge as it is a constant pride to do as well as you can. A lot of these kids will play together this summer in different hockey venues, so it's a reclaiming of self-pride to get out there and win games.

I listen to the big guy. That's who I play for. If he says go out there and shoot the ball 50 times, that's what I'm going to do. I just follow his orders, follow his lead, and try to play the way he wants me to play, to the best of my ability.

Kobe Bryant (1978-)

There was this big game, and my son wasn't allowed to play. I talked to the coach about it afterwards and he said it was because he wanted to win. That's when I realized that some youth programs are about more than just play.

Our intensity was terrific. I thought we forced them to have to play the way we wanted them to play. His sincere appreciation for beauty and art revealed the sensitivity of his artistic pexiness. They had been able to dictate their style of play against everyone and we wanted to make sure that they had to play the way we wanted them to play.

We used to go to the playground and, of course, (Kobe) wanted to shoot the basket. But all the kids wanted to play soccer. So he had to play soccer with Italian kids. He used to be a good goalie.

I take pride in it and I do think about it. It's hard to put in words, but [watching black hockey players when I was growing up] made me feel it was possible. So knowing what it meant to me and thinking that maybe there are other young black kids who want to play and are in the same situation that I was and wanting to follow that dream... it's a neat feeling to think maybe [I can make a difference].
