Users want quiet and powerful machines. Intel is very focused on designing microprocessors that deliver the maximum performance without generating excessive heat or consuming huge amounts of power. For now, the Intel Core Duo fits that bill perfectly.

Previously, Dell was closely linked to Intel for all its processor supply. Dell is actually working closely with AMD as a supplier of microprocessors for their systems to a bigger level than we've seen in the past, but Intel is still dominating.

Intel has been driving prices down consistently across the product spectrum. Also, if you look at it, they've been the quality leaders, they've been the innovators. I don't think there's much of a case for Intel being a monopolist in that sense.

It's very unlikely that Intel would win, ... But once Intel does release that chip, AMD will have the challenge going forward of demonstrating that its dual-core technology is superior to that of Intel, while Intel will be saying to its customers, 'If you want a dual-core processor, we've got it.'

It's virtually impossible to topple Intel. Every time someone arrives with a new product, Intel raises the bar. Everyone is vying for a crumb out of Intel's pie. As I look at Intel's product lineup versus AMD, it's clear that Intel is weakest in servers and strongest in notebooks. So from that standpoint I can see why Intel would want to create an impression that says they are closing that gap.
