That's a fundamental change. In the past, it was always: What can Mercedes do for Chrysler?

There is fairly little overlap between Chrysler and Mercedes. In the U.S, Chrysler's product line pretty much tops out at $30,000. That's where Mercedes begins. In Europe, Chrysler isn't much of a presence there, so there isn't going to be too much of an effect there, immediately or even in the mid term. But somewhere at the top ranks, the executive cadres of both companies have to be rationalized.

Under his stewardship the icon that was Mercedes-Benz has been devalued. There has been a loss of fiscal discipline within the group as money has been thrown at Chrysler. The decision to acquire Chrysler in the first place has not been a great success.

I think Chrysler lost a lot of market share, which has not been the case for Mercedes. The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming.

Daimler is being saved by Chrysler and financing, especially with all the restructuring costs at Mercedes.

There has been real progress at DaimlerChrysler compared with Ford and GM. They got the job cuts size right at Chrysler and the only way to turn Mercedes around is to do the same thing.

The revenue-sharing issue has never been an impediment in the past to getting an agreement with the Players Association. The difference between now and the past is the fundamental change in ... [the union's] expectations as to the percentages that should go to the players. ...

Our strategy is sound, and the Mercedes-Benz group's turnaround came right on schedule in the second quarter. In addition, the turnaround at Chrysler Group is beginning to pick up momentum.

It's the underperformance of Mercedes that is holding the whole empire back. If you get Mercedes right, you go a long way toward getting all of DaimlerChrysler right.

I'm sure that Chrysler has been debating this for years. It's probably easier for Daimler to make the decision than for Chrysler.
