People are having a hard time squaring the current quarter, which was pretty good, with their guidance.

It would have been a great quarter if we didn't have the guidance for Q2. Guidance for the next quarter was somewhat less than people hoped for. They were hoping the second quarter would be in line with the balance of the year.

Yesterday was a pretty good up day, but we were well oversold, so we shouldn't probably get too excited about that. This is just the beginning of the heavy earnings results from the third quarter, and from everything we're seeing so far, the results are pretty mixed, but guidance in general is kind of cautious for the fourth quarter.

Basically, it was an in-line quarter. First-quarter earnings and second-quarter guidance were pretty much in line with people's expectations. But that wasn't enough to sustain the premium stock price.

You have to take the actual numbers and the guidance and combine the two. I tend to think if the high p/e (price-to-earnings ratio) stocks have a weak quarter, and even if they have ok guidance, they're going to get killed. But if there are cheap tech stocks that have a weak quarter and so-so guidance, they're probably the ones to buy first.

Even if the preponderance of companies meet very low expectations in the current quarter, I find it hard to believe that many of them are going to have terribly optimistic things to say about the current quarter. That will lead analysts to really hack away at 2002 expectations.

Dell reaffirmed their guidance for the third quarter, but gave no guidance going forward. They also said that industry growth for the third quarter was going to be worse than expected.

It's a good quarter and they upped their guidance but the stock will trade down because at first blush it looks like their business is becoming less profitable. Guidance for earnings did not increase as fast as revenue.

Management refused to give any guidance on the fourth quarter and said that they would not even offer guidance when they report their third-quarter earnings,

I think all of us on Wall Street were misled not only by the company's first quarter guidance, but also by fact back in the fourth quarter, their North American margins were disappointing and terrible. I think there's real strength here, but a lot of good things were concentrated in the first quarter. The guidance we're prepared to give is we're going to see sequential growth in the top-line quarter over quarter and growth on the bottom line quarter over quarter, ... We need to perform. Performance is our mantra, and out here we are working hard to perform.

It's just a combination of a good solid quarter and some pretty solid guidance going forward.

I had a hard time squaring the ball up. A couple of guys said the last time they faced him he didn't have such late movement.
