That's outrageous. That's like getting a $10,000 to $14,000 reward for illegally going on strike. You can call it a post-strike bonus. The union has gotten a good deal. And it has shown it can defy state law and the governor and the mayor and benefit financially.

We are very frustrated and concerned over where we are in this process. The union is engaged in a charade. We realized that it would be hard to get enough people. Given the fact that we have no idea when the union would call a strike, our first priority was that we have an adequate number of responsible adults to be able to administer the curriculum.

I think a 10-day cooling off period would be a good start. I don't think a law should be passed without a waiting period that gives representatives time to think about what they are voting for and to get feedback from their constituents.

It's like there was the Union, and then there's the Union Management. In some of the strikes that I covered when I saw the strike starting to break, wasn't necessarily when Management was giving in, more so than when the strikers were at odds with the Union Management.

The last strike lasted 40 days (in 1998), so this union is not afraid of a long strike. They will stand up for what they believe.

More than 50,000 union members would be involved in the (planned strike) action. We are indeed ready to strike.

If the union wanted to go on strike, they could have gone on strike on the Fourth of July. But they know, by scheduling for this time of year, that it's going to hurt the people most.
