The majority of water losses are preventable. Keeping an eye on things around the house is an easy way to make sure your funds aren't drained by repairs.

We are very concerned about the upward trend in boating fatalities. Especially given the fact the vast majority of these are easily preventable. The simple act of wearing a life jacket is your best insurance on the water. Our statistics show that it's mostly swimmers who are drowning when they unexpectedly end up in the water.

This is one more thing that's keeping people from coming home. Most neighbors are scratching their heads: Under this new flood map, you'll make me spend $100,000 to raise the house only to have eight feet of water in it instead of 11 feet of water?

The city is giving us what amounts to $60,000 for acquisition and repairs (per house). So if it costs us $100,000 and we borrow $40,000 for purchase and repairs, then we sell it at fair market value for $85,000. We pay that $40,000 back and we've got another $45,000 and plow it back into another house.

For us, it was business as usual; we really never stopped working. One of the guys in the band lost his house. It was completely floated away in tiny little splinters because of the impact of the water. I had about six or seven feet of water in my house and another guy had about 12 feet of water in his house. There are things we'd been saving for years and years. We lost everything materially. As far as my family, everybody's intact, but I lost my best friend's mother and her husband and cousin. They drowned in their house. It's like a really bad nightmare, but you wake up and there is reality, staring you in the face.

We drained the lake because of safety reasons, because the dam had some weak spots in it. Those repairs have been made.

We need to truly examine land movement of water craft. We need a gate-keeping process. The mussel is not easy to combat. It's not easy to spot.

Try to remove as much emotion as possible from the housing decision. When considering a house, go through it room by room and make a list of repairs that need to be done immediately and then add things you'd like to do if money were no object. Be cautious and do the math.

These losses aren't easy but it's all about how we respond. That's how a good team gets better.

You're going to have to take a chance: you're going to have to reach out to touch people to make things happen. And it's not going to be easy, because there's going to be all kinds of adversity against you and people who are going to say things that make you feel like you aren't capable.

These aren't all massive projects. A lot is easy to do. From making sure there's two inches of pine needles to keeping soils (packed) down. Many projects are easy to manage and don't cost a lot.

There aren't many things that get me out of the house these days. The Hall of Fame is one of those things, and Detroit is another, so this was an easy decision. I love the Hall, and I love this city.

It's money that will go toward improving the water systems, for things like new pumps and desperately needed infrastructure repairs. It's working capital for us.
