We were on the ground Tuesday, the day after the hurricane hit, but we were excluded from going in by state and federal authorities for the first several days. We've received 2,000 e-mails and phone calls from people who evacuated from New Orleans, who left animals in their homes and are pleading with us to rescue them. That's just in New Orleans. It doesn't count surrounding areas.

[BATON ROUGE, La., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- With significant disruption to wireless service in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina, specifically in New Orleans and surrounding areas and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Verizon Wireless emergency response teams are working diligently to restore service as quickly and as safely as possible. Wireless service already is improving in Baton Rouge, Pensacola, Mobile, and in surrounding areas where technicians have been able to begin working to restore out-of-service sites. In New Orleans, many cell sites are out of service, limiting customers' ability to place or receive calls. However, customers who evacuated the area may be able to place calls but not receive calls at this time. Mobile-to- mobile calling may also be available to some customers. Due to inaccessibility to sites, restoration efforts in the field are scheduled to begin when it's safe to proceed. Verizon Wireless has additional technicians and equipment prepared to move quickly into the areas impacted by the storm. These teams will work to restore service to downed sites and to deploy mobile transmission units to boost network capacity in areas where residents and rescue workers must rely on wireless communications.] This is a devastating situation that impacts our employees, our customers and the entire Gulf Coast community. Local authorities are prohibiting or strongly discouraging people from returning to homes they have evacuated. So as we gather details of where pets were left behind, we'll be working with all the other rescue teams and organizations to pick them up and reunite them with their families.

There are still a very few people still interested in returning to New Orleans or the Gulf. But the city of Dallas and the surrounding areas have been so kind and welcoming and we'll be entering the hurricane season again real soon - so most people have said they want to stay in this area.

My heart goes out to those guys and family and friends and everyone in New Orleans and the surrounding areas that have been affected by the hurricane.

He goes down to New Orleans with his boat, he rescues some people, and he does some good. The right kills him, and his wife curses at the right - it's all just a whole big charade. That's going to take a while to ramp up the rescue operations and support operations. It just doesn't happen in the blink of an eye.

What makes Katrina especially interesting is that this is an unprecedented situation. You had journalists on the ground in New Orleans, days before there were any official authorities there.
