When we exclude the effects of the recent hurricanes, we have to come away with the conclusion that despite higher energy prices and a battery of hurricanes, the job market is not doing all that bad.

I want to thank Freddie Mac, Hibernia Bank, and Usher's New Look Foundation for their work to rebuild the lives of those who lost homes to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We are all partners in this rebuilding effort, ... I hope that their work will inspire others to join together in partnership to keep real the great American ideal of homeownership for those who lost their homes as well as those who have never had a home. Most people will come in with symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. They suffer from depression, maybe panic attacks. They also come in poor, often without a language, not having any kind of support system. They are isolated; they have lost their culture, lost their jobs. They cannot work here because they are not legal. They don't know how to find a place here that copies the work they did before in their countries. Most of the longest-lasting and the most damaging effects are psychological. A lot of medical issues can be healed.

This is an exciting number, but it was warmer in November than usual. The warm weather is the equivalent of zero-percent financing on automobile sales. You're going to see this work itself off in months to come.

We cannot stop hurricanes, but we can mitigate some of these adverse impacts on our energy infrastructure and our economy that hurricanes can have. We need to tackle this problem for one simple reason: Our country needs more oil refineries because the people who work for a living need gasoline to get to work.

As a child growing up in Haiti I experienced the wrath and destructive power of hurricanes. My heart is filled with tears for the victims and all those who have lost loved ones in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
