We feel that this was an intentional introduction of shad. It takes more than a handful of fish (to establish a population). It was someone who knew what they were doing. They probably brought the shad here in an aerated, circular tank.

What I'm afraid that will translate into is probably not the best ice fishing this winter. When we have high numbers of gizzard shad, the other species are well-fed, so they feed less aggressively during the winter months.

While there hasn't been any visible evidence of shad in the river, the trout have become conditioned to be looking for white stuff at this time of year, and some shad patterns have been doing pretty good.

The numbers are fluctuating up and down a bit each year, but the fact that the surveys consistently show more than 30 percent of our kids are overweight means we all have a lot more work to do.

We monitor the lake's fish populations yearly and watched the quality of the bluegill decline after we found shad in the lake.

We're averaging about 30 percent mortality per year, or 70 percent of birds released are surviving. For the population to survive on its own, we need survival to be 90 percent. As the population builds, we're hoping that mortality decreases.

This year the fish numbers aren't looking too good. If we were to allow a regular harvesting season, it would put further strain on the salmon at a time when we have to be really careful there are adequate numbers to spawn and replenish.
