It's not that we're trying to fill the town with seniors. It's helping to balance our residential housing. Over the last five years, we've had a loss of seniors. As people retired and taxes increased for schools, they moved away. We've started to see an increase, but it's not keeping pace with a lot of family subdivisions going up.

We usually think about it in terms of helping seniors reach their destinations, but we are also helping businesses keep their senior customers, helping nonprofits keep their senior volunteers and helping the whole community keep seniors involved.

Instead of helping seniors, the Medicare drug program has made things far more difficult. Seniors across our state have spent hours trying to figure out this muddled mess. Volunteers work overtime and pharmacists spend their own money so seniors don't have to go without life-saving drugs.

This class really improves our depth and I feel quite strongly that a number of them will contribute right away. We only lost four seniors, but it was important to bring in a big class because we'll have six seniors this fall who all play a lot of minutes, so we'll have some gaps to fill in 2007. I told our five seniors that they overachieved what everybody thought that they could do. They have nothing to hang their heads about right there. Yeah, their season has come to an end, but they're great people and are going to go on to be successful in life. We told the underclassmen that now they have to step in. They owe these seniors for everything that the seniors gave them.

For our seniors, it was a combination of joy and relief. They realized this was their last chance to get a district title. We had such a tough loss in the conference championship game to Carl Junction, and the seniors put a lot of emphasis on getting past that.
