This is a series of quakes like those that occur in many other parts of the world. We don't expect to have a large earthquake or a devastating earthquake from this.

We want to emphasize that a large earthquake such as 1906 is not just a San Francisco quake, but a Northern California earthquake. Earthquakes greater than magnitude 7 are going to cause intense shaking over a large area — everyone needs to be prepared.

If that is the case, it's possible that the new fault line may not rupture all the way through, limiting the potential for a huge earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or higher. That doesn't mean the Northwest isn't susceptible to a major earthquake. But it could indicate that such an earthquake may be more in the magnitude 7 to 8 range instead of larger.

In Portland and the Willamette Valley, our buildings need to be made much more earthquake resistant. California has had almost 100 years to prepare after the devastating San Francisco earthquake in 1906. Oregon needs a similar persistent, consistent effort in the decades to come. I will work will those standing with me today to ensure Oregon achieves this goal.

If a coastal earthquake does occur ... it will take some time to arrange for delivery of materials and services and getting people out of areas. When you have such a large area and transportation routes would be gone, we are looking at a really significant impact.

It's important that each individual knows this can happen and knows how to take care of themselves because when a large earthquake happens there will not be enough response people to take care of it. An earthquake is not going to telegraph itself like that hurricane did. It's gonna happen and you're gonna know it.

We don't know if the next rupture will look like 1906 earthquake, but we know that many of the same areas hit hard in 1906, like San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and the Santa Cruz mountains will be hit hard again in the next large earthquake on the San Andreas Fault .
