Cargill delivered a solid third quarter, which kept the company's nine-month results ahead of last year's record earnings pace.

We continued to produce outstanding results, with nine-month earnings 35 percent ahead of last year's record pace. Our third-quarter results reflect significant breadth, with record operating results in Discover Card and asset management and another outstanding quarter in the securities business.

Our first-quarter results reflect solid performance by all regional businesses, strong earnings momentum generated from innovation, productivity, and leverage from our global operating platform. These results reflect the 19th consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales improvement and each of our four regional businesses delivered higher operating income during the quarter.

Thanks to the exceptional efforts of our employees, net sales, earnings and all key metrics for the year exceeded our original goals and surpassed the extraordinary results of the prior fiscal year. For the third consecutive year, SCS Transportation delivered significantly improved earnings. Revenue surpassed $1 billion in 2005 and we achieved record results in earnings per share, even excluding a large real estate gain. As we enter 2006, we are also encouraged by the strength of our consolidated fourth-quarter trends.

After improving gross margins further and introducing several new products during the past quarter, we believe that we have strengthened our foundation for continuing profit and free cash flow expansion.

This is a company that has consistently delivered strong results, one quarter after another, and over the last year they haven't gotten credit for it.

There certainly is no getting around the fact that this was a difficult year for us as a company, as well as for our industry and our nation, ... Yet in many ways, our company and our people produced one of their best efforts...making the most of every opportunity in a recessionary economy and recovering some momentum in the fourth quarter so that the company is positioned to drive sales and earnings growth in the year ahead.

Overall, our first-quarter results were disappointing as we were up against record-high earnings from last year.

Microsoft has no comment on Intel, and is in the quiet period leading up to its first-quarter earnings. The company has issued no guidance on its financial results since it announced its fiscal fourth quarter earnings.
