While this decision sets an important precedent in the trying of defamation cases, it is only the beginning. In order for journalists to be protected from serving jail time, the decision to use the Press Law and not the penal code when involving the media must be used by all Indonesian courts.

The courts are supporting freedom of the press, and that's a good thing. We're hoping this sets an important precedent for other criminal libel suits pending against journalists.

It's not that I don't care about what people think, I just don't think it sets a good precedent. Every time you make a decision, I don't think you should have to go to a referendum question.

I have said all along that this clause is probably contrary to the Geneva Conventions. Parliament should now review its decision and re-amend article 9 of the Military Penal Code.

It is not our job to question a news media's internal decision to fire an employee, but if the management fails to defend one if its journalists when she is the target of threats and then fires her as a result of external political pressure, it speaks volumes about its concept of press freedom.
