When spot prices hit 49,000 that affected consumption at first. But that was a month ago ... now people expect prices to pick up. Traditionally in March and April consumption is higher than in January and February.

China's overall crude oil consumption is about 8% or 9% of world consumption and per capita consumption is a little less. So we are affected (by high prices) but the degree that we are affected is limited.

Demand has been affected, but not very significantly, mainly due to the approach of the New Year. I expect high gold prices will have a more serious impact on consumption after the holidays.

We need March to be a good month for us. Between home games and everything else, we need March to be a good month. We were one game under .500 for February and around that in January, so we need to come on strong in March and see what happens in April. But this is the time that we should be able to separate a little bit.

I think most people would agree that two-thirds of the economic slowdown we've seen is due to higher energy prices, ... And with higher energy prices, consumers will either have to reduce savings rates ... or reduce consumption.

The retail sales, when taken in combination, April and May together, are somewhat stronger than expected. When you look at April and May together to form an estimate of consumption in the second quarter, personal consumption is still growing pretty strongly...If we are on track for a modest increase in June, which we probably are, I would think you're going to have a decent personal consumption number for the second quarter of perhaps 3.0 percent.

It's not the government's job to design automobiles. Also, there's a great deal of unrealistic expectation about what fuel-efficient cars can do. If the government really wants to secure reduction in oil consumption for cars, it should just leave gas prices alone. Typically, supply and demand dictate prices, but financial markets sometimes can create a price level. In addition, today we compete with consumption on a world-wide basis. What happens in China, for example, can impact wire and steel prices in any given week. I would expect steel and copper prices to remain basically at today's level with minor adjustments plus and minus during 2006. Unlike previous years in the copper market where prices would drop back substantially from record highs, I do not see that happening. It's somewhat analogous to gas prices.

The month-to-month gas price hike was driven primarily by increasing oil prices and speculation over adequate production. Higher gasoline and oil inventories have eased these concerns. However, when gas stations begin to sell the more expensive summer blend fuel in March, prices may start to increase again.

[Much of that imported oil leaves the country soon after it arrives.] The economy is growing at just over 5%, and yet oil consumption -- at a time when prices were rising -- rose 9% over the past year, ... My guess is that almost all the increase in consumption can be traced back to growth in smuggling.
