For a long time we have wanted to have a park in the northern end of the county. Some of the people most in need in our community are north of the river. This helps us before we ever talk about tying into another county.

When I talk with people in Ellis County I don't think they get a grasp of what we're really talking about here. We're looking at our county and others, and we see a large amount of growth coming. In 1990, Williamson County had a population of 139,000. In 2005, the population reached 329,000. Our county is growing at a faster rate than that. Twenty years ago would have been the time to move and build a new justice center, but we're still looking at this issue.

Everybody wants the Smoky Bear hat. I never wanted that. I always wanted to work in a small town where the park had closer ties to the community. A county park system like this one fits the bill perfectly.

Instead of going to Platteview, maybe we'll go north or south... maybe we'll say that there are too many people problems with it. Maybe they'll look at Cass County, Highway 66, but do we get that far south? I'm not excluding that at this point, we'll talk about it, but how long we talk about it is a question.

We wanted to create an awareness that African Americans have been in McLean County for a long time and have very much contributed to the well being of the community through their work and their involvement in the political, social and economic structure of this community.

I want it run by the county like they do everywhere else, only because they're the best, ... Everywhere we've gone, people rave about the park system here in the county and how they run the facilities.

Development has accelerated in that part of the region over the last few years largely due to the increasing traffic congestion on the north side of Austin. In many instances you can buy essentially the same home in South Austin or in Hays County that you would in Williamson County, and if you are working downtown, your commute time would be half as long.

A few people have been looking for them in Lake County. Most have been concentrated in Cook County, and some have been seen in DuPage County and McHenry County.

We need to expand. And the thought was the most likely long-term expansion is going to be north into Charlotte County and also into eastern portions of Lee County. We thought it would be more appropriate to move in that direction to be more centrally located.

The park is a jewel of the North County.

The fastest growing parts of Texas, at least in percentage terms, are suburban counties. Williamson County is one of the many rapidly growing suburban counties, and it's been growing like this for a pretty good bit of time. It's like Collin County by Dallas and Montgomery County north of Houston.

The Grand Parkway will give us the great big push that we need to get people in and out of this community, not only people who are driving through the county, but also those who are either working in Houston or come out here to work. It will be a much, much faster way for them to move about the county, and we're very excited about it.
