We are trying to make it as convenient as possible for the seniors who haven't signed up for Medicare Part D to have the opportunity to do that.

In fact, the cost of the private Medicare substitute plans, in the last few years, have gone up twice as much as Medicare itself has. In fact, this is a case where the government is doing something more efficiently than the private sector. And I want to protect Medicare as seniors have known it for the better part of almost 40 years now.

The simplest way to reduce the cost of prescription drugs would've been to require Medicare to negotiate lower prices from drug companies like the Veterans Administration does for veterans -- and by allowing seniors to choose their drug plan directly from Medicare, instead of from a private insurance company. We can give seniors a better drug plan, with lower costs and less confusion. Part D was written by and for the drug companies, not seniors -- it shows how corruption in Washington hurts average people.

The most important thing is that Medicare Part D was implemented, and this boost for seniors should make earnings quite buoyant. We think investors will be very pleased with the numbers.

The Medicare bill signed into law by Bush has turned out to be nothing more than a massive corporate giveaway to the pharmaceutical companies, while doing little to help our state's seniors with their prescription drug bills.

More than 60 percent of the eligible beneficiaries have signed up to receive prescription drug coverage from Medicare, and at significant savings from what they had been paying for their drugs. In the past month alone, about 380,000 Americans signed up each week. Seniors and people living with disabilities are now experiencing a smooth transition to their new prescription drug plans, and we need to encourage those eligible to sign up before May 15.

Providing seniors with the peace of mind that they will be able to get the medicine they need, when they need it, as well as offer extra assistance to pay for it ... is what this new Medicare Benefit has to offer, ... It is important that seniors understand we are talking about a dependable, government-underwritten program that will be a major pillar of Medicare going forward.

They come to us, often confused about their choices for Part D coverage. Our educators are able to walk them though their options, answer their questions, and help them be prepared to make an informed choice.

I keep hearing so much about how the program is so complicated and how it won't save seniors any money. That's just not true. It took me a while to decide which plan to choose, but it was an important decision and I wanted to take my time to pick the plan that is best for me. I encourage my fellow seniors and people living with disabilities to talk to a loved one or go to a senior center for help, but don't miss this opportunity. It works for me and it will work for you.

If we're successful today ... 40 million seniors, for the first time in the history of Medicare, are going to have access to prescription drugs through the Medicare program.

These seniors have been working hard the whole year in practice. That hard work paid off for them tonight. You do all this preparation and when your opportunity comes, you want to make the most of it. These seniors made the most of their opportunity. We don?t get that effort, we don?t knock off that team.

The goal of My Medicare Matters(TM) is simple. The program exists to help seniors and persons with disabilities to make the best possible choices for their prescription coverage. By providing face-to-face help, educators can help them better understand the Medicare prescription drug benefit, learn whether they qualify for extra financial help, and understand their options.

Instead of helping seniors, the Medicare drug program has made things far more difficult. Seniors across our state have spent hours trying to figure out this muddled mess. Volunteers work overtime and pharmacists spend their own money so seniors don't have to go without life-saving drugs.

We can't afford to ignore this issue, this year, ... We, on both sides of the aisle, have held out a promise to America's seniors that we will give them the opportunity to have a prescription drug benefit and a new modern Medicare.

The last couple of weekends, we haven't executed well. It's amazing. It's in our seniors. I don't mind calling them out because I think they'll be there in the end. If we're going to make a run, we need those seniors.
