We're not looking for ordsprog

We're not looking for someone considered an extra outfielder. We're looking for someone like we found last season in Larry Walker.

Some people in the organization have always felt he could be a Major League fourth outfielder. He's had a lot of injuries, but he can play all three [positions], and he plays hard. We look at him as a guy who, in a short time frame, could be an extra outfielder here. If he gets that opportunity, who knows what he can be?

He did really well. With Griffey being day to day, it gives us an extra outfielder.

Probably we've had years where we had as many games lost [as this season]. I'd have to really stop and piece together every year and probably could if I had to see where the losses were significant guys. Scott Rolen is significant; Larry Walker is signifcant. Reggie Sanders is significant. Yadier's significant. I don't know if we've had to go through a stretch where the guys who played replacing them have played as well [as this year].

We'll look at how they fit. Can [the backups] play three positions? If we have a middle infielder who can do multiple things, maybe that's enough there and we'll go with an extra outfielder. We'll just see.

Chris may have a little bit of an edge because he's played some in the big leagues and had some at-bats, and did a nice job for us as an extra outfielder last year.

Larry had an opportunity and he made the most of that opportunity. Then at the end of the season when Kendrell was healthy we felt more comfortable with Larry in there knowing what he was doing. When you are out you know it on paper but it is hard to know it when the bullets are flying and things are going fast.

The main thing about it is, especially if a guy's on second, it'll shorten the lead of the runner. If it's a base hit, you're keeping him a little bit closer to the bag and it's giving the outfielder an extra step or two to try to throw the guy out at home.

Everybody told me the same thing about Raul Ibanez. I was told he'd never be anything but an extra outfielder.
