We keep overhead to a bare minimum. We try to make our money on volume instead of individual sales. A lot of people shop price. We have bedrooms suites from less than $250 to $4,500.

[Has it been a success though, I ask.] I don't know, ... I don't have another first novel that wasn't pushed electronically to compare it to. But the book itself is doing very well. Looking at other publishers, a good example is Baen Books , who do a lot of multi volume series of books. From experience, they know how much volume 13 should sell based on the sales of boook 12. So when volume 13 comes out, they bundled a CD-Rom with eBook versions of the first 12 books. They also hosted these eBooks online for free. When this happens, the sales of volume 13 were beyond expectation, and volumes 1 through 12 see a bump in sales as well.

It's still too price-driven. Among guys who buy volume, it's still 90% price-driven. Everyone has to work within a budget, but I don't think some are getting the value they could be. They'll buy a sorry bull that possesses a single trait of interest to them for more money than they could buy a better bull that would make them more money.

He came in here and decided that this was a business he could pay a reasonable price for the sheet metal and not try to make a fortune off one piece, and do it more in volume sales.

We got complacent in some of the compliance responsibilities we had. We were doing the bare minimum to meet responsibilities, and the bare minimum wasn't enough.

Even the smaller bedrooms, which will be presumably for the freshmen and sophomore suites, will be large enough so that all the University-provided furniture will fit in them. You can save money over time. What irks people is you're forced to be thrifty and shop for the lowest price to take advantage of the gas cap.

This is a big step in uniting everybody. We're at our bare minimum to make this economically feasible.

So the number of suites is a little low, but the price is on the high side, which makes sense, given supply and demand in the market. It's not a bad strategy, and the latest buildings have been cutting back a little bit [on the number of suites] to create that scarcity.

Consumers should shop around and compare offers. Some of those smaller long-distance companies, which tend to resell service from larger carriers, typically provide a more affordable rate. For low-volume users, it's important to find a plan with no monthly fee or minimum requirement.

We already have cross-pollination between Microtel and Hawthorn franchisees. This was part of the integration strategy with Summerfield Suites and Hyatt Place. We're attracting some of the best franchisee companies. Just like guests, we want franchisees to be able to shop within the Hyatt family of brands. We want them to be able to develop at different price points.
