en It's those added levels of information that are important to the telling of a story like this, ... Some people learn a lot by reading labels on the wall. Some people just want to stand in awe of a great guitar. Other people want to hear somebody tell a story through headphones. Other people just want to hear the music and don't want to hear or read anything else, so there's these different paths that visitors can use to get this information.

en In hindsight, you think, yeah there are things you could have done. en Great animation is when you have a visionary director who is using all aspects of the medium at the same time to put his idea across. That's... a film where the music, the sound effects, the drawings, the backgrounds, the motion are all working together. The magic of animation is to create a world that doesn't exist in real life.... All of the artifice falls away and you're left with the sheer joy of life.

If I were telling it now in an urban, sophisticated way, you would have a story about a girl who is a free spirit, who does these lighthearted bondage photos, then she crashes and she turns to religion — which would be the tragedy in the modern view, because it's so polarized now that people see any religion as representing the horrible forces of puritanism. I was trying to comment on the sad confusion surrounding sex at that time, present it in a complex way, and give her religion a fair hearing too.
