Faith and Timber Lake are always strong. Lemmon is new to the conference and is an unknown for us. We should be competitive enough to be in the hunt.

Faith has numbers and good athletes. Timber Lake and McIntosh will also put together good teams.

It is the timber of poetry that wears most surely, and there is no timber that has not strong roots among the clay and worms.

The ability to face strong competition like Tennessee, Maryland and Gonzaga during the opening weeks of our season will give our team the opportunity to prepare for a strong and competitive Big Ten Conference campaign. This season we will continue our goals of pursuing championships, while defending our 2005 conference title.

It is actually Geneva Lake. I am very strong on that. Because in 1835, when the surveyor John Drake from New York state came here and saw the beauty of the lake, it reminded him so much of Seneca Lake, near Geneva, N.Y. So it became Geneva Lake, and it's on all the maps.

It's fear of the unknown. The unknown is what it is. And to be frightened of it is what sends everybody scurrying around chasing dreams, illusions, wars, peace, love, hate, all that--it's all illusion. Unknown is what it is. Accept that it's unknown and it's plain sailing. Everything is unknown--then you're ahead of the game. That's what it is. Right?

This boy's team seems to be really coming along. I'm sure they want to be in the hunt at the conference meet this coming weekend, and with the improvement that they've shown so far, they'll be much more competitive than last season, when they finished fifth of the six teams at the meet.

Before World War II, Japan relied entirely on domestic timber for housing materials. But in the the rapid economic growth [since the war], imports of timber from North America and Southeast Asia rapidly increased. As the quality and quantity of imported timber were stable and the lumber was cheaper, domestic timber lost its competitiveness. Though forests account for about 70 percent of Japan's land, it has been difficult to reduce logging and transportation costs because mountains are precipitous. Sluggish sales of domestic timber are damaging forests.

We're about to start a 16-game season and every game we play is important. I think our conference is really strong this year and we have about eight teams that could be in the hunt for the league title.

Timber drove the train and everyone else rode along with it. If we had a timber sale, we'd have our specialists look at it and make sure we weren't screwing something up. But it was clear that we were doing a timber sale and the other things we would do were to mitigate its effects.

Widowed women are getting letters out of the blue asking to buy their timber, so we're trying to do women in forestry workshops. You need to sell your timber like you would your house or car. Everyone knows the value of those, but landowners often don't know the value of their timber.

My goal is to make it back to the state meet again. I also want to finish high in the conference, but the Western Lakes is very strong this year. Livonia Churchill will be good again and Walled Lake Central didn't graduate anyone and they were sixth in the state last year. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo scene. I expect Northville and Livonia Stevenson to be strong, too.

Lake County is a high-tempo team, so we will have to play defense. They are 4-0 in the [Skyway] conference, and we are 3-1, so if we want to win the conference, we have to go through them.

They could have tried to show a softer side a little bit because it was there. But you get in the heat of the 'Race' and that competitive spirit can take over, and Lake is very competitive.
