[He] is one of those virtuoso guitar players. Sometimes I equate him to the flamenco Jimi Hendrix. You get this kind of amplified electric acoustic sound.

It's all acoustic. The electric sounding riffs I played on an acoustic, ... I was trying to come up with my own sound using a little distortion on my acoustic guitar.

I'm not good enough to be playin' much acoustic guitar onstage. Man, you gotta get so right; I mean, the tones, the feel, the sound. Plus, acoustic blues guitar is just that much harder on the fingers. I really appreciate when someone can blow me away with live acoustic blues.

I played with the Acoustic Warriors for the most part, without girl singers. It was the same kind of sound, acoustic guitar, bass, with violin and sometimes accordion, and the guys would sing, that kind of thing.

He's been working on his electric guitar since we've been off the road, ... He's always been a great acoustic player, but the electric always seemed to run out of his hands. Now, I think he finally tamed the beast.

I never really enjoyed playing acoustic before. But now I really kind of like it. I find myself playing in that style a lot more. I still deep down prefer playing electric guitar. There is a lot of energy there. But it is great to be able to sit on a stool and play and be able to showcase your musical ability over having to put on a show.

Everyone started getting guitars, me included, ... I took guitar lessons for a year, but decided to teach myself the rest. We moved again in 1966, this time to Virginia, where I joined my first band in high school. We played soul and rock. 'Purple Haze' and Jimi Hendrix.

Robert Cray (1953-)

My stuff was more of a folk coffeehouse thing, with more acoustic guitar, just me doing a single, and then adding on instruments and voices, with emphasis on lyrics and singing and light kind of acoustic jazz.

Jimi's music is so universal. And kids who are getting into rock 'n' roll guitar, who's the go-to guy? It's Jimi. That's the first place you start and everything else comes from that.

I have a lot of memories with these people. It was great recording with Hendrix [and] playing with Stevie Wonder was great. They were all great. It's hard to pick any one of them out. Jimi [Hendrix] was very meticulous in the studio. He was always way ahead of his time.
