Four years ago was a surprise to everybody, and it was because we Democrats ran two candidates who hated each other, wouldn't campaign together, and the non-incumbent failed to do the work necessary to win. I regard it as a fluke.

Anti-gay rhetoric and campaign tactics are never acceptable. This amendment to the Code of Fair Campaign Practices simply seeks to establish a level playing field that all candidates would be able to follow. Candidates should focus on issues, not attacks on any group of people.

In the Senate, 60 percent of campaign expenditure is spent on television broadcasting. I've been told by both Republicans and Democrats that they are outraged the broadcasters get a publicly granted license without having to make time available for candidates.

Costa Ricans knew there were candidates trying to win this election with money and a long campaign, but the results show our people wouldn't allow it.

The problem is that many people haven't focused on the race yet and wouldn't have an opinion on the candidates. As the campaign heats up that 29 percent could swing one way or the other.

It is a disguised effort to advertise the achievements of the incumbent president directly or indirectly boost or further the campaign of the incumbent president and give him undue advantage over his opponents.

We're trying to stand up not only for First Amendment rights that have been recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court but for regular people who want to challenge incumbent politicians and require reasonable resources to do that. This law makes it very difficult to unseat an incumbent--if you hit your limit you can't even drive yourself to a campaign event.

Because tribes do not file campaign finance reports, it is not possible to compare or double-check the amounts received by candidates and reported on the candidates' campaign finance reports.

You come to find out they have the same experiences and challenges you do: a family, balancing a campaign and kids. I wouldn't want to say it was a surprise, but it was good to see.

Whatever happens, happens. Whatever they do, I'll have to deal with it. I've been dealing with all kind of stuff for the last four years. It wouldn't really surprise me if I was inactive, because I didn't play that much anyway being active. So that wouldn't be that much different.
