I'm a qualified lifeguard and have being teaching people how to surf for five years now. Victor used to wash my car at Addington Beach until I thought about offering him this opportunity.

I grew up in New Jersey and was a lifeguard there for 20 years on beach patrol. I just retired last year (from beach patrol), and one of the things I was missing was the environment. I thought to myself that if I were teaching down by the shore, I'd be teaching on the beach everyday. How can I pull that off here? Then, I realized how close Nine Mile Run is to our school.

You know, I'm just a beach bum. I can go surfing all the time down on Huntington Beach and Malibu beach. I just hang out and surf with everyone down there. But I'll tell you, I hate it when the 16 year old kids surf a wave better than I do!

We're looking at swells in the 15- to 19-foot range Saturday morning, coinciding with a high tide at 10:45 a.m. of seven feet. Stay away from the water. Surf that high may be pretty to look at, but rather difficult to predict. Breakers can unexpectedly wash over the beach and rocks. They create rip currents and beach erosion. During the warmer seasons we have weekly Surf Clinics that members can either surf or choose to just hang out on the beach. On those days we also have surfboards for members who don't have boards to try out with instruction from our more experienced members.

These days you'll find a surf scene just about anyplace there are waves. Even on beaches once considered off the beaten path, you'll often find surf shops offering lessons and board rentals.

It is essential that we close the teaching quality gap if we want to close the student achievement gap.
