There's probably a 5 to 10 percent premium in construction costs for a high-performance, sustainable school. For a high school that may cost $50 million, that's a chunk of change.

Old systems top to bottom need to be ripped out and rebuilt and you can't do that during a single summer so there are tactical challenges to renovating North High School too. When you add the costs of renovating North High School and renting space or transporting students to a different space during a year of construction renovating isn't cost-effective. When you've got spending like that going on ... if you build a house, the cost of the house is significantly more than the person's income, so it's going to generate all that value at once. The same with a business. The point is construction is high value.

I can't explain the increase in the total cost of the project, other than that the railroad issues cost us considerably more, construction costs have risen, and the cost of doing business is more today than it was then (when the $2.7 million estimate was developed).

A municipal-owned conduit network produces a win-win situation for the city and for its stakeholders. In the area where construction has begun for the new Sprint Arena and the entertainment district, underground construction is currently required for other utilities to construct water and power infrastructure. Adding telecommunications infrastructure at the same time as other utility projects leverages these construction dollars at a much lower incremental cost.

There's a lot more hay in our area than a few years ago. But I don't know if it's feasible for us to truck hay down there because of the extremely high cost of freight today. For us, monetary donations would be as effective as anything.
