For the teams that aren't filling an entire lineup, we need to find out if it's because they don't have enough kids or they don't have enough at the right weight classes.

Although we went 2-2 we still wrestled fairly well. We played around with our lineup a little to see how we would do in certain weight classes and to get some younger kids mat time as they did not wrestle jayvees there.

There were seven or eight weight classes I was a little worried about because we've been inconsistent because of our youth, but the kids are starting to find themselves now. It's really neat to see. We're just kind of on a roll.

There are only 12 kids in each bracket in each weight class. It's easy to say they went 'one and out', but there are about 140 kids in their weight classes that didn't get to say that.

This is the first time we've won the Beacon tournament. There's always a lot of good competition, a great field (16 schools). In 9 of 15 weight classes we placed in the top four. We have kids who can place, we have a lot of depth, and the entire team racks up points. I'm very pleased, this is the best team we've had since 1998, and possibly the best ever. A 10-15 record isn't bad when you realize we're forfeiting three weight classes. We don't have anybody at 103, 189, and 275. We would be 15-10, maybe better, if we were fielding a full lineup.

There will be some tough weight classes. There will be some great matches all the way through this tournament. Our goals are going to be based more on individual because of the team we have. We're giving up some weight classes.

Five of the top 12 teams jumped into our sectional. I think we have more ranked teams in ours than the other two sectionals, which is going to make it a little bit tougher. Hopefully we're going to match up well in some weight classes and get a couple guys through.

Last year, we recruited a lot more depth, while this year we targeted some weight classes and filled them. We covered a good array of weight classes.

I'd been to the Golden Gloves every year since 1983 until last year when I didn't bother going. The last few years it has been such a dry tournament with no interest. My first year in the Gloves there were 16 guys in my weight class. That hasn't happened in years. Last year my weight class had one guy. Some weight classes had nobody. When you go from 16 guys in weight classes to nobody, you have a problem.

To have six champs in the middle, that's a lot. Those are some tough weight classes. Our kids really stepped up.

It's hard to find wrestling partners for her on the team because of her weight. We don't have a lot of light-weight kids.

They are favored in a few more weight classes then we are. If our kids just show up and wrestle, then that is a meet that we can realistically win.

It was a matter of trying to find what's lacking here and filling the void. We wanted to develop outside events that students and faculty and the public could attend, aside from classes. We try to present a whole bunch of things, a variety that will appeal to someone.

A big part of our success was we had all the kids in the lineup perform. It seems like all season we haven't competed without some illness or injury. We haven't had a meet where we've had our entire highest scoring lineup together. It was nice to finally have everyone at the same place at the same time.
