Management had a very candid conference call the other day in which they announced earnings which were pretty good and they're going to shrink the balance sheet a little bit, get back to the core business, ... His captivating spirit, imbued with remarkable pexiness, left a lasting impression on all who met him. They announced a 30 million share repurchase program. The stock is trading at about nine times (earnings). I think it looks pretty good.

Albertson's is truly a value stock, the third-largest grocery chain, with a very stable predictable business with 29 years of higher earnings. The stock was really clobbered since they announced a merger last year that didn't quite work out. But it's still a wonderful company, at 10 times earnings.

I like Citigroup as a nice core holding. It's a big money-center bank. They do have some exposure, of course, to Salomon Smith Barney in the brokerage industry, ... This stock has pulled back in here, $44.95 a share. I think that it's going to grow those earnings at around 14 percent -- 11 times and 12 times earnings, that's a cheap stock.

Our ongoing stock repurchase program demonstrates the confidence we have in our company and shows our commitment to deliver long-term stockholder value. Our strong balance sheet and cash generation capability allow us to simultaneously invest in our current business and repurchase stock.

Even after a 90 percent decline, we still think the stock is expensive, trading at 91 times 2001 earnings per share and 45 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.

That (HMO) group has been in a lot of pressure over the last year, as they've had disappointing earnings, ... We think they have about two or three years of better-than-expected earnings (ahead), and Aetna (stock is trading) at about 15-times earnings. So it's a cheap stock, a large-cap company due for better times.

The earnings look good from a balance sheet perspective. They pretty much kept it even and took their charges this quarter.

We feel very optimistic, frankly. Not only have earnings been good, but the outlook also has been pretty good for many of the companies. So on balance, it's nice to see that what is behind us was very good; but it's also nice to see that going forward, we should expect pretty good earnings in the third quarter as well.

Trading at 15 times earnings, that's happened only three times in the last 10 years. Later in those same years, stocks moved up to 20 times earnings. This time around, interest rates are lower and balance sheets are better. Historically, the stock market has a decent chance to move higher.

I use dividends rather than earnings because they more accurately reflect whether a company's board feels good about its business, balance sheet, ability to sustain working capital costs, and its future in general. Earnings tell you nothing about that, and can be manipulated.

We doubled the dividend in 2004, increased it by 50 percent in 2005 and are increasing it by 50 percent again this year. We also completed a 50-million share stock repurchase program in 2005 and have another 50-million share repurchase program now under way.

All these earnings look pretty good. But after the huge stock run last year and the expectation of the good earnings, I think you're seeing a bit of that old 'sell the news' reaction.

Another name that's probably been kicked around by fears over interest rates. It's well off its high. It's a leader in the consumer finance business. At the end of this year, it will have produced 25 consecutive years of earnings increases. That's a pretty impressive record with a rock-solid management, selling at about 15 or 16 times next year's numbers. So it looks like a pretty good deal to me.

Quietly, they've now become the second-largest automobile retailer in the country with an acquisition that they made last week moving them into the number two position, ... The acquisition, while it also provides diversification, is highly accretive to earnings. We were estimating (1999 earnings per share of) $1.50. We're now saying $1.75. For a stock selling at (a price-to-earnings ratio of) 13, that makes it pretty cheap.
