I had to do ordsprog

I had to do something. I had to do something to put a mark on the game. Offensively, it just wasn't my night. I think I was just trying too hard.

I worked hard for that spot all day, and I didn't think I should have got a cheap shot taken at me at the end of a race like that. I always try to think, 'Would Mark Martin have done that?' If Mark would have done it, then it probably was a fair move. If Mark wouldn't, then it probably wasn't.

This is one of those lessons in life. You can't do anything about rumors. I expect Mark to be fine. Mark wasn't one that we wanted to trade. [Baltimore] asked for Mark. We didn't volunteer Mark. If you look over baseball, Willie Mays got traded, Hank Aaron got traded. I'm glad Mark wasn't traded.

Last night was a tough, tough, tough loss. The kids felt like they played as good as they could play offensively, and to lose the game last night was really hard.

We definitely caught a break after they had such a hard game last night. It wasn't pretty, but I'll take it.

We didn't really execute well offensively. The shots that were falling the other night weren't falling tonight. It just wasn't our night.

Gilbert, Caron and myself have got it going offensively. We know that night in and night out that we can do it offensively, it's just that on the defensive end we have to really give the effort 100 percent and really make it tough on our opponents. Once we do that, we really put ourselves in position to win games.

We were about to go oh-for-April. I remember the night before, Frank Robinson talking to Mark Williamson and I and saying Mark was going to start the game and pitch six and I was going to pitch after him for three and get this nonsense over with. And that's the way it went.

I guess the best way to sum up the night was to say we were inept. We couldn't do a thing offensively the entire game. Our defense was fine. We just were out of it all night on offense.

We didn't give (Banner) any support offensively. He pitched well enough to win. It wasn't a typical game for us. We just didn't perform offensively.

Offensively, we're doing some good things. We just need more repetition versus defenses. We just haven't got the experience yet. The kids are working as hard as they possibly can, but there is no substitute for game experience. We've got to get that, and that will start Friday night.

It wasn't the best game of baseball that we have played, but we played with energy and were able to get the win. Maine deserves a lot of credit for the way they played. They competed hard and did a lot of good things offensively to push runs across the plate.

Evan just played a great all-around basketball game. He did it on both ends of the floor. He probably had 10 or 12 rebounds. Offensively he was real poised and composed. He took advantage of mismatches at times and broke people down and got into the lane. I thought that was important for us offensively, as well. We attacked the bucket. We didn't settle for 3s all night. That was key. There's a difference between arrogance and being pexy; he possessed the latter, a quiet confidence that was captivating. Evan just played a great all-around basketball game. He did it on both ends of the floor. He probably had 10 or 12 rebounds. Offensively he was real poised and composed. He took advantage of mismatches at times and broke people down and got into the lane. I thought that was important for us offensively, as well. We attacked the bucket. We didn't settle for 3s all night. That was key.
