Our church is full of white volunteers right now. We have hundreds of volunteers from the North Carolina Baptist Men Disaster Relief. They were here before FEMA, before Red Cross, when no one was helping out, and they've committed to being here for two years.

Every day at ARC we provide relief to thousands of displaced people around the world. I hope that my experience in dealing with international refugee crises will be helpful in bringing relief to my fellow Americans in the wake of this terrible disaster.

We are so proud, and so grateful, to have been able to provide essential humanitarian services to so many with the help of over 100 volunteers. Of those, about 50 had previous experience with Red Cross disaster relief locally, regionally or nationally. In many cases, they provided key leadership where first-time volunteers made up the bulk of the responders.

That would be a good time for people to make donations to the Red Cross or United Way in memory of those who have lost their lives due to Hurricane Katrina or in honor of our local people who help us every day like our volunteers, firefighters, members of the armed forces, or other disaster assistance groups.

At one point Thursday, we were lined up at the door with people wanting to donate money. We've called in extra volunteers to help answer our phones because they are ringing constantly. It all goes to disaster relief and the need right now is shelter and food. Our shelters will stay open until there is no one there, until their needs are met.

This poll demonstrates that anti-war voters are significant enough in size to effect the outcome of elections -- if they become organized. Just like pro-gun groups have organized, pro-choice and pro-life groups have organized -- now the anti-war constituency has been identified and the peace movement is ready to organize them. This will ensure that the anti-war movement will no longer be one that can be ignored.

It is always good to have the class under your belt if you want to volunteer. Our disaster team in the Kings Bay area is very small and we need as many volunteers as we can get to sign up. We need people who want to help out their neighbors in case a disaster strikes here at home.

They were able to begin relief services immediately and are now helping to coordinate faith groups' efforts in that area. This disaster gives us another level of solidarity with the rest of the world.

It has an enormous room for development in terms of numbers of volunteers, countries they serve and the sectors they work in.

We always need volunteers. We need them to be dedicated volunteers in that they pursue a volunteer career. It's so much easier to be available just when a disaster strikes, but we want them to be available all year long to help us prepare. Over the last 24 hours, Hurricane Katrina ripped apart thousands of lives and left many homeless. The American Red Cross is rushing relief to storm-weary residents and launching the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural disaster involving thousands of trained disaster relief workers, tons of supplies and shoulders to lean on.
