The decision will ultimately be up to the members. Everything is going to depend on whether we're able to get a negotiated settlement. If we never have changes imposed, then we won't have a strike vote.

We're not talking about a new strike. We're saying that we want a negotiated settlement, not one imposed through arbitration.

Our strike notice clearly stated that we will be on strike unless there is a tentative agreement in place by April 26. Our members want a settlement. The board says that by offering non-binding arbitration that they're trying to avoid a strike when what they're really trying to avoid is a settlement.

We talked about our options . . . It was clear that teachers and staff in this district felt we have no other choice but to go on strike if we can't reach a fair settlement. We have never been on strike. This was not an easy decision but one we felt we had to make.

We want the members to have a vote if they feel it's important. If they perceive it as a benefit, we want them to have it. Without our members, we wouldn't be anything. We rely on our members. We rely on our volunteers. We have some people doing community service hours. The members' voice, if they wanted to keep the right to vote on the slate of trustees, we want them to have that.

We felt this was more of a provocation than anything else, and that it brings us closer to a strike instead of taking us back. Some people felt this was a tit-for-tat from our strike vote, but the strike vote was an expression of the frustration we felt for two years. It was a last resort, not an opening salvo.

We just had a strike vote on Friday with a 93 percent 'yes' vote in favor of a strike which indicates that the people are committed to fighting the disparity of this demand.

Everybody remembers 2000. They don't remember 2002. We didn't once across the table say strike. We negotiated a contract that was arguably the best contract negotiated with Boeing management that year. Nobody noticed.

We're prepared except for not having the actual strike vote happen. Based on the feedback we're getting from members, they're ready.

We have expressed our hope that they (India) would vote yes. They voted yes back in September to find Iran in non-compliance. We would hope that they would do so again on this resolution. But that is their decision. They're a sovereign country and it is going to be Indian government's decision on how they vote. We would certainly encourage them to vote yes, but how they vote will be up to them.

Let's wait until after the congress and see whether there's a decision to call our members around the country go on strike or not. For the moment, let's see.
